I bought this because it was delightfully petty, had a great cover, and I was intrigued by the premise. I was surprised to actually get a full-length, well-written book with intelligence and character development. Plus an EPIC smackdown in a note at the end about the whole #cockygate thing.Here’s where it both delighted me and let me down. I’m not sure I’ve ever run across a book with this exact dynamic (spoiler alert!) that’s somewhere between master/slave and daddy/boy. The valet/Dom called it “willing helplessness," and told the boy he’d be punished for doing anything on his own without permission. He got punished for pushing an elevator button, for God’s sake, and it was HOT.My disappointment lies not in that dynamic, but in not getting much page time to explore it. They don’t agree to have that kind of relationship until probably 70% in, and we get just a couple of glimpses of what it’s like before Things Happen that have to be dealt with that take the focus almost entirely away from that. Sure, Brand is still strong and protective, but I feel like I missed out on really seeing how a unique relationship like that would play out over time. I read this as slowly as I could manage, but according to my stats I didn't finish another of the books I'm reading before I was too caught up in emotional floodwaters to stop, clinging desperately from word to word, trusting I'd land somewhere good. Trust paid off; though my heart's battered and overfull, I'm grateful for the experience. I've never read a more personal, intensely sweet love story. Brand and Ash define what they want and need from each other as they go, as we all do in reality with our desires even if we use labels that are too big or not perfect.His Cocky Valet is not just excellent, but was written fast, like crazy-fast, which YOU CANNOT TELL.I mean. The sheer talent here is just stunning.Written out of justifiable outrage over #CockyGate, in stunningly few days - I watched the process via the author's Twitter, captivated and nonplussed - here is this utterly lovely story. It doesn't matter that the stupid trademark nonsense died as this hit the market. It only matters that the author took something petty and made art.
