Love the cover but it lost half a point because it’s a cliffhanger. 😒 Ned and Cole’s story will end in THE MAN WHO HATED NED O’LEARY. Be warned there are some horrendous events, people doing some appalling things to other people and sandwiched in there are two men who found the love of their lives. But in the wild west, can that really happen?! 😟 Their back story will tear at your heart.On the day that Ned is told by his uncle he must get married or leave the ranch, he is approached with an opportunity of a lifetime. Poor Ned still remembers the day the Gotham Boys showed up at his family’s mountain cabin. His life changed forever after that terrible day. He may have an opportunity to get revenge but will he take it? How can this naïve ranch-boy handle what he will encounter? There were many OMG moments: the train incident, their meet-cute, their first kiss, the hotel bedroom, the standoff of Ned with Zeb and Tom. There were many others but these stand out. All of this with a pins-and-needles ending.This was a well-written, suspenseful, edge-of-your-seat but sometimes appalling story. Let’s face it the old west was not all sunshine and roses. In this book it does not get glamorized at all! I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through Gay Romance Reviews and give it high praise even though it is a cliffhanger. I give it 4.5 steamy, seriously salacious stars. I've followed this author's conflicted and morally ambiguous characters through late 1700s Cornwall, Slavic villages and the contemporary US and have loved every minute of the time spent wondering how I really felt about several of them. When I saw they were doing a Western I could not wait to read it and also click to pre-order the second volume. Oh man, this is my favorite of them all! Ned's story is heartbreaking and that he survived with even a modicum of decency is amazing. He tries to be a stone cold killer and get his revenge on the Gotham Boys gang but he can't stop feeling what he feels for Cole. Cole on the other hand has mostly bought into the Gotham Boys' ethos but he too is all shades of grey, especially when it comes to Ned. I see much heartbreak still ahead for these two in book two but knew going in that this was a cliffhanger so that didn't bother me at all. Just more angst for the author to deliciously wrench my heart with. I am a huge Zane Grey fan for his descriptions of the Western geography. I found Merikan's descriptions worked well for me too. I was there with these characters in a real world. If you enjoy police procedurals where cops have to go undercover and then get sucked up into the darkness, if you love a good enemies to lovers plot (with a really serious reason for being enemies, where any concession seems like a betrayal of one's murdered family) and if you want what is bound to be one of the biggest blow up scenes ever when all the secrets are out on the table, do not hesitate to grab this book and get ready for the next one.
