It feels as though something is missing.Shane struggles with turning into what other people call him a 'beast'. He has mutated genes, explaining why he can turn into something else entirely.Aki is a psi. If he has contract with other people he can see inside there head. To the darkest places in there head, he sees scary things that terrify him. This book is great, I loved all the characters... well almost all of them. I hate the bad guy of the story (obviously). The relationship between Aki and Candy is so amazing. You can really feel the connection those two have. This story flips points of view.I read some reviews where people are saying they wish they got a heads up that the book was about more than just Shane and Aki. So, here's your heads up.The different point of views confused me at first, especially when they switched to Candy's point of view. Once I realized that though everything flowed well.My only strife with this is that there wasn't much time of Shane and Aki actually being together as a couple. They finally slept together, then Aki goes and saves Candy.. then the story kinda ends there. I just wish we got more information on how those two interact as a couple in a relationship that's new to the both of them.I would recommend this though if you enjoy paranormal romances with great friends. The first 60-70% is great.Amazing, intense world building. The setting is fascinating (though often pretty grim). The beginning is a bit hard to read at times - this a post-apoc/dystopian world, and the way it got there is...not pleasant. One other reviewer mentioned that there should probably be a content warning, and I think I agree with that. But, beyond the general harshness, this presents a deeply interesting world....and now to the bad:- I have some concerns with the bdsm elements of this story, some of the actions blur the lines of consent to me; communication is essential to this kind of relationship and there's basically none. I felt that whole part of the relationship was forced as well, to be honest; it felt extremely awkward and out of place to me. The progression and pacing of the relationship towards the end felt off to me in general.- Neither MC seems to have much agency in the overarching story, which I found sort of baffling. The crime plot just sort of disintegrates. Neither MC has much of an actual personality (...unless shoes is a personality? I don't know anymore)- The ending is a hot mess, I hated almost everything about it. It went full anime. It's absolutely dripping with unnecessary melodrama and retroactively kind of ruins a few previous elements of the story for me. Most of the last 20% or so makes me cry salty tears of ruined potential, to be honest.Overall, the story has amazing bones, but the wrap-up is pretty nonsensical, and kind of wastes the good setup.
