- This storyarc and writing can only be appreciated by a more mature audience, that has life experience behind it to appreciate this book. This book will not resonate with younger audience, or folks just looking for artwork and shallow hack and slash adventures.. This is a master piece that required to reader to be at a level of mental maturity to be able to comprehend the many questions and explanations it presents. This is the thinking man's Conan.- This writing and take on Conan and Belit, was one of the best I have ever read. A good portion of it is story telling with a fresh new look and imagination.- I have read all the other Conan Chronicles, till this particular section, most were good hack/slash adventures with captivating stories rendered.- But this ... this is at a whole different level, for a comic, it takes a highly deep, philosophical tone, it actually goes deeper into what is life? by the time the reader is done with this story arc. The reader will emerge a changed person with many question.- This is the thinking man's Conan the Barbarian arc. And the most frightening thing about this story arc is, it mirrors reality of each and every one of us so closely.- I really loved reading this, I have a feeling the Conan - Belit story arc in the Conan Chronicles is one, that is going to only get more and more special with every read.- However, this is a story arc, that is not for everyone. I get it why people pick the art, but to me the art is different and interesting in it's own way. I wanted to rate The Song of Bêlit higher since the art was generally good. The main problem is Brian Wood's portrayal of Conan.Conan has his doubts and fears, but only when dealing with the supernatural. When dealing with men and women, he never lacks confidence. The way he submitted to Bêlit was uncharacteristic. The Roy Thomas interpretation of Conan's time with the infamous pirate queen was truer to the character. Yes, he loved Bêlit but Conan did not relinquish his free will to her. No one can write Conan like Robert E. Howard and different authors will have their own interpretations. However, this Conan strayed too far from the one created by REH.Speaking of supernatural, where was the "sorcery" in Brian Wood's run? Except for the final six comics in this collection, there were no "weird" elements to speak of. Not every Sword & Sorcery story needs sorcerers and monsters, but the genre has its name for a reason. With that said, the issues which specifically adapted Queen of the Black Coast were excellent. This is a no-brainer considering they adapted a classic story. Though Wood made some alterations, this version was generally in-line with the original, which was very much appreciated after so much deviation in the bulk of this book.If you're a devout Conan enthusiast then it's worth picking up The Song of Bêlit to add to your collection. If you're a newcomer to Conan and/or Sword & Sorcery, you're better off picking up the first four volumes of Conan Chronicles Epic Collection which cover the exceptional Busiek & Truman runs.
